Nokia lays off 3,500 employees

Posted on 10:03 by Unknown
Nokia is planning to lay off an additional 3,500 employees, as the company continues to restructure after announcing its decision to focus on Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system.
The affected employees work in manufacturing, location and commerce, and supporting functions, Nokia said on Thursday.
In manufacturing, Nokia plans to close its factory in Cluj, Romania by the end of 2011, as the company's Asian factories provide greater scale and proximity benefits, according to Nokia. The company is also reviewing how to best take advantage of manufacturing operations in Salo, Finland, Komarom, Hungary, and Reynosa, Mexico. The planned changes will impact on the number of personnel in 2012, it said.
Nokia is also consolidating its location assets including NAVTEQ and Nokia's social location services operations. Going forward, Nokia will concentrate its development efforts in Berlin, Boston, Chicago and other supporting sites, while closing its operations in Bonn, Germany and Malvern, US.
The changes are painful, yet necessary, and will turn Nokia into a "more dynamic, nimble and efficient challenger," CEO Stephen Elop said in a statement.
The closure of the Cluj factory and related adjustments to the supply chain is estimated to impact about 2,200 employees. The changes in the location and commerce business are estimated to affect approximately 1,300 employees, according to Nokia.
The layoffs are in addition to the measures Nokia announced earlier this year. In April, Nokia said it will outsource Symbian activities to Accenture, transferring 2,800 employees to the company in the process, and cutting about 4,000 jobs.
Nokia is currently in a tough spot because sales of its existing Symbian-based smartphones have dropped faster than expected, and large volumes of Windows Phone-based devices aren't scheduled to arrive until next year.

Dell Planning More Handsets For India

Posted on 09:29 by Unknown
Dell India Executive Director and GM (Commerce and SMB), Mahesh Bhalla said,"The mobile phone business is doing really well and we have received tremendous response to the devices. Though the category is still in nascent stage, we are confident of it growing significantly". The company has five models of smartphones and tablets in India at present including the Dell Streak5, XCD35, Venue, and Venue Pro. The new handsets will run Windows and Android according to Bhalla.

Bhalla also stated that the company is not thinking about introducing low-cost handsets as of now. He argued that India is not a market driven by price alone, and that people seek value. He pointed out that Dell smartphones are already available in the sub-Rs 10k category as well, but rather than focusing on price cut, the company wants to offer a better experience and features.

When asked about the tablet market, Bhalla said that the market is small in India and it is too early to be able to predict the future. Dell has not mentioned the names or even the number of handsets it plans to launch. We think that Dell might be planning a Diwali bonanza for everyone by timing the launches in the festival season. While it has already been clarified that the prices will not be low, the handsets better be good.

Four Nokia Belle Phones With 1 GHz CPUs: Leaked

Posted on 04:20 by Unknown
Nokia is in the news yet again, but it's a leak this time and not an official launch. A website has accessed a photo of a leaked document, which seems like Nokia's roadmap for this year or the next. This document reveals four new Nokia handsets, apparently running on the Symbian Belle platform. Interestingly, the document also reveals that all of these four handsets will feature 1 GHz processors. It seems that Nokia is finally planning to roll out 1 GHz processors with Symbian smartphones. The newly announced Nokia N9 will also have a such a processor.

Nokia To Launch Four Symbian Phones Powered By 1 GHz CPUs

The four handsets will be called Helen, Zeta, Cindy, and Fate. It seems like the Helen is a flagship handset with 3.5" AMOLED display, Symbian Belle, 8 MP camera, and apparently will be the successor to the Nokia C7. The Zeta will feature a slightly smaller 3.2" AMOLED display, and Symbian Belle as mentioned in the image. This handset is said to be the thinnest smartphone in the world. However, no info is available about the camera of the device since it is not visible from the picture. The Cindy and Fate will be the mid-range handsets here with 3.2" AMOLED displays and 5 MP cameras respectively with 1 GHz processors. The Cindy will be NFC enabled whereas the Fate will not.

Nokia To Launch Four Symbian Phones Powered By 1 GHz CPUs

We are not sure if these images or the document in it are genuine, but it sure does look enticing. If these handsets are for real, Nokia shouldn't wait for too long because these are going to be the fastest Symbian handsets ever made. However, if these are released too late, then we fear that it will miss the boat. Nevertheless, we hope that the struggling mobile company doesn't miss out on this opportunity, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

Nokia Makes Smartphone Connection to Microsoft

Posted on 08:29 by Unknown
Nokia, thе world’s bіggеѕt standalone mobile-phone company, hаѕ finally signed a deal wіth Microsoft worth billions οf dollars whісh іt hopes wіll hеlр tο reverse іtѕ falling share οf thе fаѕt-growing аnd lucrative smartphone market.
Thе announcement οf іtѕ рlаn tο shift over tο thе software company’s Windows Phone platform fοr іtѕ top-еnd smartphones came аѕ thе Finnish company set out quarterly financial results whісh ѕhοwеd continuing pressure οn both іtѕ smartphone аnd standard mobile-phone products. Profits іn thе mobile division wеrе down 17% year-οn-year tο €690m (£607) οn revenues up 6% tο €7.1bn, аnd overall profit down 10% tο €439m οn total revenues οf €10.4bn, up 9%.
Although thе figures wеrе better thаn expected, thеу still contrasted poorly wіth Apple’s spectacular results οn Wednesday night, whісh ѕhοwеd іtѕ total phone revenues wеrе $12.3bn, mаkіng thе iPhone manufacturer thе world’s lаrgеѕt phone maker іn sheer revenue terms.
Nokia still sells thе mοѕt handsets – 108.5m іn thе quarter – bυt even thаt number wаѕ level wіth a year ago, indicating thаt thе company іѕ having trουblе expanding іtѕ business quickly іn markets such аѕ China, India аnd Latin America, whеrе іt hаѕ identified thе bіggеѕt potential fοr growth.
Apple hаѕ аlѕο creamed οff thе mοѕt valuable smartphone users, wіth average selling prices οn іtѕ handsets οf $660 (£400) іn thе latest quarter compared wіth €147 (£130) fοr Nokia’s smartphones. Average prices fοr іtѕ phones overall hаνе continued tο drop over thе past four years even whіlе іtѕ phone volumes hаνе remained largely static.
Nokia plans tο abandon thе Symbian platform currently used οn іtѕ smartphones bу thе middle οf next year аnd adopt Microsoft’s Windows Phone bесаυѕе chief executive Stephen Elop – a former Microsoft executive – believes thаt іt offers thе best hope οf building a sustainable platform іn thе fаѕt-growing market. Hе called thе deal “a win-win partnership” bесаυѕе οf thе complementary nature οf thе companies’ assets.
Thе two companies announced thе outline fοr thе deal іn London іn February, аftеr Elop hаd courted both Google аnd Microsoft, choosing between thе Android mobile operating system – now thе world’s mοѕt-used οn smartphones – аnd Windows Phone, whісh wаѕ οnlу introduced іn October 2010 аnd hаѕ hаd a lukewarm reception frοm customers.
Nokia shares rose 3% οn news οf thе deal аnd thе results, whісh wеrе less bаd thаn analysts hаd feared. Bυt Elop’s guidance fοr thе forthcoming quarter indicated thаt thе company hаѕ bееn hit bу supply chain problems caused bу thе earthquake аnd tsunami іn Japan. “Wе expect a more challenging second quarter,” hе ѕаіd, forecasting “greater impact” frοm thе earthquake’s effects thаn іn thе јυѕt-еndеd quarter.
Elop іѕ expected tο сυt a swath through Nokia’s staff following thе Microsoft deal, whісh wіll remove thе need fοr a lot οf іn-house software development. Hе ѕаіd thе company expects tο save аbουt €1bn bу 2013 through reduced headcount. Thе mονе hаѕ bееn unpopular within Finland, whеrе Nokia hаѕ аbουt 130,000 employees.
Richard Windsor, global technology specialist аt Nomura, ѕаіd: “It’s a bit οf a nο-score draw really. Yου′ve gοt a solid set οf numbers, bυt guidance іѕ bаd. Bυt іt’s nοt thе cataclysm thаt hаd bееn feared. Wе wеrе worried thеу mіght miss second-quarter revenue bу 10-15% bесаυѕе wе′d heard numbers out οf Asia wеrе bаd.”
Geoff Blaber, analyst аt CCS Insight, ѕаіd: “Performance wаѕ largely consistent wіth expectations аnd thеrе wіll bе a sigh οf relief thаt thеrе appeared tο bе nο considerable downturn аt thе low-еnd tο compound Nokia’s difficulties іn thе high-tier. Finalisation οf thе agreement wіth Microsoft means Nokia саn now focus οn execution.”

Nokia to launch dual-SIM handsets soon

Posted on 08:23 by Unknown
Mobile handset market leader Nokia plans to launch its dual-SIM phones in the Indian market very soon.
“The new phones will be produced in our Chennai facility,” said Mr Prakash Katama, Operations Director (Chennai Factory), Nokia India, said.
Announcing the rollout of the facility's 500 millonth phone, he said that number of phones in a span of five years is the fastest achievement in the world – “going by our own facilities elsewhere in the world”, he said.
Nokia expects to double this number, and its current turnover of Rs 2,500 crore in the next few years. It exports 50 per cent of its total production to various countries.
Nokia has manufacturing facilities in China, Brazil and India. It is planning to set up one more in Vietnam.
The company initially produced only its basic model phones in the facility. “Now, we produce more than 20 models of basic and middle-level phones in the facility,” he said.
Though Chennai facility is the largest and best in terms of productivity for Nokia, he said there is still a lot of scope for more indigenisation of the product. “Currently, only 20-30 per cent of the product components are sourced internally.” Besides, the company has also brought the Shah Rukh Khan-signed 500 millionth phone under the hammer. The phone is available for bidding through e-auction at www.nokia500million.com

Smartphone boom lifts phone market in first quarter

Posted on 19:13 by Unknown
Strong demand for smartphones gave a further boost to overall cellphone market volumes in January-March and made iPhone supplier Apple Inc a rare winner on the market, research firms said on Friday.
IDC saw January-March market growth of 20 percent, helped also by strong gains by smaller vendors as the three largest phone makers -- Nokia Oyj, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and LG Electronics Inc -- lost market share.
Apple's iPhone sales more than doubled from a year ago, buoyed by strong sales on Verizon Wireless and additional carrier deals elsewhere, with market share rising to 5 percent.
"The iPhone once again sold particularly well in developed economic regions of the world, such as North America and western Europe," IDC said.
Apple is now within striking distance of LG, which had a 6.6 percent market share in the quarter. Nokia's share dropped to 29 percent from 35 percent a year ago while Samsung slipped to 19 percent, IDC said.
Blackberry-maker Research In Motion Ltd benefited from the smartphone boom in the quarter, winning market share, but warned late on Thursday its quarterly sales would miss earlier forecasts.
The Canadian group is in a transition period as it revamps its product line and launches its first tablet computer.
Separately Strategy Analytics estimated handset shipments grew 17 percent from a year ago, driven by surging smartphone demand in mature regions and increasingly popular models with multiple SIM cards in emerging markets.
"The first quarter of 2011 was marked by supply-chain disruptions related to the Japan earthquake tragedy and by ongoing mild component constraints in areas such as touchscreens, memory and cameras," said Neil Mawston, analyst at Strategy Analytics.
Mawston said component shortages would continue for at least the next six to nine months, causing restricted volumes or rising input prices, but operational challenges from this would remain minor for most manufacturers.

Nokia’s Pushmail Banned In India

Posted on 09:50 by Unknown
In a set back to mobile handset manufacturer Nokia, the government has asked telecom service providers to bar company’s proposed -- pushmail or powermail -- service till it put in place a legal monitoring system.
“In view of the Intelligence Bureau’s report, Department of Telecommunications is requested to advice the Telecom Service Providers not to launch Nokia’s proposed pushmail/powermail service without putting in place monitoring facilities to the satisfaction of the LEAs,” Ministry of Home Affairs said in a communication to Department of Telecom.

Messaging services from Nokia involve push email for companies and consumers and enables mobile users with compatible Nokia cellphones to manage multiple email accounts from widely used email services like Yahoo!, Gmail, Rediff to Sify.

The communique came at a time when Blackberry services are under the government’s wrath due to the security related issue for not providing a solution to intercept its Enterprise mail services.

The government had asked BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion (RIM) to come out with a satisfactory solution to intercept its Enterprise mail services by March 31, which has been already expired.

Nearly 50 per cent of Nokia’s E Series business phones sold in the country get activated for e-mails.

These developments came at a time when the home ministry has asked the telecom and IT departments to overhaul existing legal frameworks to broaden the meaning of telecom/internet services.

The telecom department and the IT ministry have been asked by the home ministry to ring in the necessary changes in the Indian Telegraph Act of 1885, the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2007, the Rules under Telegraph & IT Acts to ensure operator compliance with the demands of the security agencies.

Once the necessary amendments come, it will be mandatory for telecom service providers to have the systems in place to deliver authorised intercepts based on telephone numbers, device identity, email IDs, IP addresses or keywords to the national security agencies on real-time basis.

7,000 mobile phones hacked in Britain

Posted on 11:13 by Unknown
7,000 mobile phones, including those of actress Sienna Miller and former culture secretary Tessa Jowell, were hacked by a British tabloid, a lawyer has claimed.

Without accepting the numbers, the newspaper has since apologised. Lawyer
Charlotte Harris, who is representing several of the celebrities involved, said 7,000 people may have had their mobile phone voicemail messages intercepted by The News of the World.

The daily has now apologised to the victims, saying, "We publicly and un-reservedly apologise to all such individuals. What happened to them should not have happened. It was and remains unacceptable."

The
hacking took place between 2004 and 2006, the Daily Express reported. Harris said her clients will not accept a settlement from the newspaper until they have received full disclosure.

"What we have at the moment is an apology and an admission. We haven't even got near the truth yet," she said. "If you hack into one person's phone, you have access to everyone who has left a message for them.
And then if you go into the person who has left a message, you get all of theirs. "You have got to be running into several thousand, just from that methodology. It is certainly not a handful - maybe 4,000, 6,000, 7,000, a huge amount of people," Harris said.

Cabinet minister
Danny Alexander described the phone hacking as "outrageous", while London Mayor Boris Johnson called on all newspaper editors to declare any hacking carried out by their staff.

Telecom ministry to impose Rs 300-Cr penalty on Idea Cellular

Posted on 22:46 by Unknown
The ongoing spat between the telecom department and Idea Cellular is set to intensify. Telecom minister Kapil Sibal has accepted the recommendations of Additional Solicitor General Amarjit Singh Chandhiok to impose a Rs 300-crore penalty on Idea Cellular, and has cleared his department's move to slap this fine amount of the company, for holding more than 10% stake in two mobile companies in six regions of the country, in violation of existing norms.

ET reviewed a DoT internal note on this issue. This note also adds that the DoT's position is further strengthened as telecom regulator Trai has recommended cancellation of the six overlapping mobile permits held by Idea Cellular The Aditya Birla Group firm holds overlapping mobile permits in six telecom circles after its acquisition of Spice Communications in October 2008. The Idea Cellular spokesperson slammed the DoT and said that "in 2008, post the proposal for the merger, the company had written to the telecom department and offered to surrender overlapping mobile permits" and also pointed out that this was a "matter of record".

"It is surprising that the DoT has not taken cognizance of this and is now finding the company in violation," its spokesperson added. The government and Idea Cellular have been involved in a standoff recently over the telco's acquisition of Spice in 2008. Last week, the communication ministry got a stay on the 2008 merger between mobile phone companies Idea Cellular and Spice Communications from the Delhi High Court, leading to angry outbursts from Idea, which accused the telecom department of indulging in 'duplicity and muscle flexing' . The Aditya Birla Group firm, which is India's fifth largest mobile phone operator , also accused the DoT of obtaining the stay from the High Court "to cover for its (the department's ) inefficiencies" and added that "Idea will resist and not be bullied" . The telco is also moving the Delhi High Court seeking a vacation of the stay order. Idea holds overlapping permits in the following fashion. It acquired Spice Communications that had permits to operate in six regions - Punjab , Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi , Haryana and Maharashtra - but actually offered services only in Punjab and Karnataka.

Idea merged these two with itself as it did not have mobile services in these circles, but did not use Spice's licences in the other four regions where it was already present . Idea Cellular did not use its own licences and airwaves allotted for Punjab and Karnataka because it had integrated Spice's mobile operations in these regions with itself.

The Aditya Birla Group firm had applied for these permits prior to its deal with Spice. Recently, the telecom department issued a cancellation notices to Idea for holding overlapping licences in the same circles as well as failure to rollout services in the circles where it held dual permits. The DoT, in its internal note, states that Trai was of the view that both sets of mobile permits held by the company had to individually comply with the rollout obligations since the department had not approved the Idea-Spice merger. The note adds that Trai had recommended Idea's permits in Karnataka and Punjab and that of Spice's in Maharashtra, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh be cancelled for failure to rollout services.

On Spice's mobile permit the Delhi circle, the note adds that airwaves had not been allotted and hence rollout clause could not be applied. ET has also learnt that with regard to Idea's mobile permit in Punjab and Spice's in Haryana and Maharashtra, the department has referred the matter back to Trai since one year had not been completed after the allocation of start-up spectrum. DoT officials say their decisions are backed by legal opinion from additional solicitor general Amarjit Singh Chandhiok.

The legal opinion had suggested that Idea was in violation of telecom rules, which prohibits a mobile phone company from holding more than 10% stake in two telcos operating in the same regions. It also added that Idea Cellular and Spice Communications also violated the April 2008 merger guidelines, which prohibited new entrants from selling stakes within three years of obtaining licences. Spice had obtained four of its six mobile permits in 2008 ahead of the deal with Idea.

Now, your SIM card could be your ID

Posted on 09:00 by Unknown

Ever imagined that your phone can be your identification proof? If reports are to be believed then researchers are developing an application that can let you to show your SIM card as your identity proof. The new application will integrate the electronic identification data into a mobile phone SIM card, so that your phone becomes your identification.

MWC witnessed the prototype of this new research that facilitates secure identification of the user by his eID data stored in the SIM card.
